Applications Cloud Scenario
Most computing resources are underutilized, particularly Java applications and web server clusters. This results in a strong desire to use fewer resources with higher utilization rates. Though virtualization provides improved utilization benefits, it does not inherently have application resource utilization knowledge to know when and where to distribute the application workloads to ensure responsive operations. As a result, clustered application servers tend to remain static with dedicated resources.
Problems that an Applications Cloud addresses
Management solutions are not available to make an application clusters elastic based on demand, in order to improve utilization. Additionally, if resources are over used response rates drop. As a result, server sprawl continues to exist that is expensive and time-consuming to manage. Because service level agreements must be maintained, often additional resources are purchased as the only option to ensure compliance. This results in a continued rise in infrastructure costs without measurable benefit.
Solution offered by an Applications Cloud
As Java applications and web cluster solutions are deployed in the datacenter their workload can be managed by Platform ISF. Platform ISF manages all the computing resources under its management as a pool of resources in order to monitor their application workloads. This information can be used to expand or contract application workload capacity on computing resources in order to ensure the most efficient use of the resource pool. Additionally, workload management policies can also dictate if and how an application can run workloads on external services. This enables the ability to burst to outside pubic computing resources on demand.
Benefits of an Applications Cloud
- Higher utilization of all servers
- Smarter application on-demand flexing
- Controls data center costs
