Electromagnetic Geoservices Accelerates Offshore Hydrocarbon Exploration with Platform™ Computing Grid Solutions and Dell Cluster Systems
Paris, France, April 26, 2006 – Platform Computing, the global leader for enterprise grid software solutions, today announced that Electromagnetic Geoservices AS (emgs) has selected Platform LSF HPC and Platform Rocks as its solutions for workload processing and cluster management. Based in Trondheim, Norway, emgs is a global leader for SeaBed Logging (SBL) – a proprietary electromagnetic exploration technique the company provides to the world’s leading oil and gas companies. As the technology for SBL has become more sophisticated, relying on compute-intensive 3D depth migration modeling, emgs recognized the need for a more powerful, scalable IT environment to support these evolving requirements. After an exhaustive evaluation process, they made the decision to go with 500 Dell™ Poweredge™ 1855 blade servers combined with Platform Rocks for simplified cluster management and configuration. In addition, emgs also deployed Platform LSF HPC, to accelerate workload processing and ensure optimal usage of compute resources. Through deploying the combined Platform-Dell solution, emgs has a dynamic IT environment that elegantly combines breakneck performance, intuitive management and high levels of scalability – easily meeting the needs of their business today, and for the future.

"As worldwide energy needs continue to rise and demand for seabed logging products increases, it is imperative we innovate within our IT environment to allow us to extract resources more efficiently and safely," said Helge Stranden, IT-manager, emgs. "Through working closely with Platform Computing on our cluster infrastructure, we have a solution that’s optimized for our most compute-intensive tasks, while intelligent enough to allocate resources where and when they’re needed. When you combine this with a simple, highly automated management environment it adds up to a very compelling return on investment for our business."

"The market for HPC clusters continues to expand rapidly, with more and more companies looking to the compelling cost, efficiency and performance benefits of these powerful solutions," said Dominique Comte, Vice President and General Manager, Platform Computing EMEA. "Through working closely with emgs and our strategic partner Dell, we have delivered a flexible solution that is easily tailored to meet the unique needs of the customer. We look forward to working with emgs as they continue to chart new depths exploring the ocean SeaBed."
